Buying Your First Touchscreen Smartphone

How to choose and buy a touchscreen smartphone.

A smartphones is not only “smart” because of the load of features that it has but also because you need to be smart when buying one. This is because they come in an almost bewildering array of choices with different features, functions, and capabilities, as well as sizes, and colors; and they usually do not come cheap. When moving up from your dumb or feature phone to the world of touchscreen smartphones, you will need not only to read up on the reviews and literatures about your prospective phone, but also reflect on what you really need in a smartphone.

Indeed, this is the first step in the process of buying a smartphone. If you, for instance, are a businessperson who needs to be in constant touch with your boss, staff, or clients exchanging documents and spreadsheets, you might want a phone with excellent email features and the capability to prepare, edit, or transmit financial reports. If, on the other hand, you are a geologist who spends plenty of his time in the mountains studying the earth, you may prefer a phone with a good GPS navigational system. If you like taking photos but are never satisfied with one unless you can control aperture, shutter speed, or ISO, you may never even use a phone’s 5-megapixel camera.

Once you have identified your needs, you can begin narrowing your list of choices. You can ask your friends if they are familiar with any of the phones in your whittled down list. Often they will freely tell you about their experiences with the phone. You can also browse the Internet for user and expert comments about your prospects but be sure to balance these reviews against each other instead of accepting any one of them hook, line, and sinker.

Do not limit your research on the features and price of the phone. Find out if it is linked to a specific provider. Often, though, providers have very similar plans owing to the stiff competition among them. Still, with a little bit of research you may be able to find discounts and rebates.

If you are a Mac user, you may want to verify if the phone can sync with it as there are phone models that are not fully compatible with the MAC operating system. PCs, on the other hand, do not generally have a problem with this.
